Professor Wu Loo Ling
Senior Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist

Welcome Message

Welcome to the MPEDG (Malaysian Paediatric Endocrine & Diabetes Group) website.

Paediatric Endocrinology in Malaysia has come a long way from 1985 when there were only two paediatric endocrinologists and two national referral centres in Malaysia. Many children and adolescents with endocrine disorders then were not given optimal care due to the lack of specialists in this field. Children are not small adults. They have different biological, emotional and psychological needs, which require special attention and consideration. The spectrum of endocrine disorders is also quite different from adults and management is much more family-centred than just patient-centred.

In 2003, a 3-year fellowship training program was developed under the Ministry of Health Malaysia to train paediatric endocrinologists to meet this need. Since then, the paediatric endocrine fraternity has grown from strength to strength. To date, paediatric endocrinology is a recognised subspecialty under the National Specialist Register (NSR) in Malaysia.

With an increasing pool of paediatric endocrinologists and heightened public awareness, we are seeing more children and adolescents with endocrine disorders, both in numbers as well as in variety. The paediatric endocrine fraternity is ever so excited to share our experiences and challenges so that we may educate and spur one another towards greater heights in knowledge and understanding and standard of care to our patients. In early 2021, the MPEDG (Malaysian Paediatric Endocrine and Diabetes Group) was formed as a chapter of the Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS). We consider this a significant move forward. The MPEDG website serves as an excellent platform to reach out and connect with colleagues locally and overseas, to share and to disseminate information, and for CME and networking.

In closing, let me express our sincere thanks to all parties who have contributed to the development of the MPEDG. And a special thanks to our patients and their families who have been instrumental in our learning and growth as paediatric endocrinologists.

Chairman's Message

Looking beyond the horizon: Paediatric Endocrinology in Malaysia

The idea of forming a paediatric endocrine group started in 2019, in view of the steady increase in the number of paediatric endocrinologists in Malaysia since 2003. The formation of this group was proposed at the Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS) Annual General Meeting in 2020. And in February 2021, we proudly have our first meeting to celebrate the inception of the Malaysian Paediatric Endocrine & Diabetes Group (MPEDG).

Malaysian Paediatric Endocrine & Diabetes Group MPEDG was formed with the aim to:
• Advance paediatric endocrine knowledge via education, training and research
• Ensure optimal care for all children and adolescents with diabetes and endocrine conditions related to growth, puberty, thyroid, bones and minerals, adrenal, pituitary, sex development, obesity and glucose metabolism disorders in Malaysia.

As the first chairman of our newly formed MPEDG, it is with great excitement for me to share our plans and initiatives to continue to expand our group and to fulfill our objectives.

For a start, we are excited to announce the upcoming 11th Asia Pacific Paediatric Endocrine Society (APPES) Biennial Scientific Meeting from 26-28 November 2021 in conjunction with the 42nd Malaysian Paediatric Association (MPA) Annual Congress. Bringing the theme of “TOWARDS BEST PRACTICES IN PAEDIATRIC ENDOCRINE DISORDERS & DIABETES”, the objective of this important meeting goes hand in hand with APPES and MPEDG mission and vision. This theme also emphasizes our hope to improve knowledge, provide best practice and increase collaboration in the field of paediatric endocrinology both locally and internationally. Apart from this, we have penned down a solid plan to improve our members’ knowledge and expertise through various subcommittees.

We also hope to build stronger collaborations with our adult endocrine colleagues and our own paediatric fraternity including other subspecialty societies, to better manage our patients. We will strive to elevate the care of our paediatric endocrine and diabetes patients in Malaysia to be at par with the international standards. To achieve that, MPEDG through its members will initiate and strengthen the collaborative work with international organizations/societies through education, training and research.
